Six to four weeks out

Book removalists early, especially around month-end and school holidays when good operators sell out. Start the declutter so you move only what you keep. Begin the change-of-address list: electoral roll, licences, banks, insurers, subscriptions, schools. Confirm your settlement date with your agent and settlement agent so the whole sequence has its anchor.

Two weeks out

Arrange utility connections at the new address (power, gas, internet) for settlement day or the day before where possible, and disconnections behind you. Set up mail redirection with Australia Post. Confirm removalist details, access at both ends and parking for the truck. Pack progressively, label by room and keep an essentials box separate: kettle, chargers, tools, first-night bedding.

Settlement and moving day

Do the pre-settlement inspection seriously: the property should be in the contracted condition, with included items present. Keys release once settlement is confirmed, typically early afternoon, so plan the truck accordingly. Walk the old home one final time: meters photographed, every cupboard opened, keys consolidated for handover.

The first week

Test smoke alarms, locate the meter box and water mains, change the locks if keys’ history is unknown, and update your address with anyone the redirect catches. Then stop unpacking for one evening and have dinner in your new home; the boxes will wait, the moment will not. Welcome home.
